from a friend in NYC, who heard from another friend, that [personal profile] otherdeb's angiogram test found no blockages in her coronary system, and so no need for the much-feared deeper surgery!! She will be sent home later today. They'll schedule her for a different procedure later and will put on a course of new drugs, hopefully ones that won't make her feel worse.
Hooray for good news!

To all my fannish, filkish and dancing friends;

After a long day at a high school assessment, I looked at my phone, to find a sad message from my friend Suli Isaacs. My friend Sandy (nee Nathanson) passed away this morning, peacefully, in her sleep. She had had terminal lung cancer for the past year. I am so glad I saw her at Arisia, albeit very briefly. She was her usual feisty self, big smile, lots of hugs, although traveling in a scooter, and was very thin. She will be missed, both at conventions, and dance floors and NEFFA. My heart goes out to her siblings, David, Phil, Debbie and Sharon, and her daughter Jessica. RIP, Sandy.

I was looking for the You Tube of last year's New Year's Eve with Amanda F. Palmer in NYC, when I first heard Neil giving his New Year's Wishes... It was wonderful, and I can still hear his voice in my head. I think he included all of these, but it has gone walk-about, and so I give you these quotes.

December 31, 2001 and 2004: "May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't forget to make some art -- write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself."

Dec 31, 2008:..."I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you'll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you'll make something that didn't exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind"

December 31, 2011: "I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.

So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever." -- Neil Gaiman

This past year was especially difficult for me, and my friends and extended family came thru for me, in flying colours. Thank you, all, for being a part of my life. Know that you have a place in my heart.

Honey, bee stings and reactions to said stings, Mum memorial celebration of life, PISA... a lot going on, and no spoons to deal with writing at the moment. My house is a disaster, with an end on sight, but not until after this weekend, and probably the end of next week.

I do love my friends. I have the best friends. Thank you, all, for giving me support and love and hugs, whether near or far. I do so appreciate you all.

Persis, Spencer, Talis and David invite you to celebrate Persis’s Rescheduled Birthday on a hopefully fortuitous day in late January. No explosions please, and hopefully no snow storm ON the day.

Where: The Big Blue House, 11 Wayne Road, Milford, MA 01757

When: Saturday, January 28, 2012, 3 pm-1am

What: Pot Luck; we will provide cake and ice cream, some hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, soft drinks, and paper goods. Please bring something to share.

RSVP: Not necessary, but helpful if you can, so we have an idea of how much food and paper goods to have on hand. e-mail [email protected], or call the house at 508-478-4343, or call or text Persis at 508-282-0089.

Directions can be found at http://www.love-song-productions.com/directions/. Street parking is available, but there is an overnight parking ban.

Our driveway can hold 6 cars, but as we have a 15-passenger Van and 3 other resident cars now, space in the driveway is limited.

The hot tub is currently out-of-commission, so don't bother bringing a towel.

The usual etiquette rules apply. If you do not know all the members of the household, please find us and introduce yourself. The house is not child-proofed, although there is an 16.1 y.o. in residence, as well as two guinea pigs and a turtle, and some smaller-child appropriate toys. We have limited couch/floor space, so please ask ahead if you’ll need to stay over.

I am collecting stories and remembrances of Badger, to put onto the posters that will be at the MIT memorial on Friday, the Arisia filk on Sunday at 1 pm, Boskone, (hopefully) Lunacon, and Readercon this year.

If you would like to contribute your favorite (or more than one) Badger story, please either post here for all to read, or send them to me at persis at thorndike dot name, and I will print them out and include them.

Badger's sister, Pat updated this morning: As of now Alice has the dialysis line in place and seems to be tolerating it reasonably well. It's one of those times when "much the same" is actually good news. Dad and I will regroup and see how things are tomorrow.

I believe I will still be going in the MGH later this afternoon, and will take good wishes, hugs, and prayers with me.

Just back from seeing [profile] badgerthorazineBadger/Alice E. Washburn, read her another Tanya Huff story, Burning Bright (from the Relative Magic collection of short stories) and updated her on the latest well wishes. The nurse said she had been more alert earlier today, was able to respond to the psych who came in this am, despite still being fairly heavily medicated. Just before I got in, they had to move and turn her and clean her and the bed, so she was back up to higher levels of O2, but while I was there, the levels came down a bit. Still a long way to go, but, PROGRESS! :-) Keep those positive energies and prayers coming.

[profile] sodyera posted the following in a comment to the last Badger update:
How to Transmit Healing Energy
Think of the subject, e.g., [profile] badgerthorazine at her feistiest and funniest. Think of the best time you ever had with her.

***
Put your fingertips together at the middle of your forehead.
Close your eyes for five seconds.
Take a deep cleansing breath in... and out.

BREATHE IN!

Hold for five seconds, chanting "Badger Feel Well" to yourself.

Breathe OUT and Fling that energy stored in your hands FORWARD as far as you can.

Pause, if possible.

Breathe normally.

***

Please spread these instructions liberally through the Internet.

Peace and Love.
Ariel Cinii

I went in to see [profile] badgerthorazine Badger/Alice E. Washburn last night. She is looking good, has some colour, and the nurses are braiding her hair in a very regular basis. Still in medically induced coma, but her nurse Crystal said she is continuing to make infinitesimal positive babysteps. I read Tanya Huff's short story, I'll Be Home For Christmas, hung some pictures on the poster, and read some fb updates and well wishes to her. Please continue the positive prayers, energy and thoughts.

On top of everything, we have 2 inches of water in the basement...

Friday, I got a text from my friend Suli, who said that our friend Badger was in MGH and it did not sound good. She broke her left femur on November 15, had surgery on it November 18, was recovering (Suli and daughter went to visit on the 19th) and was in ICU as of the 20th. I went with Suli yesterday, Sunday, to visit. I hate when awful stuff is happening to my friends.

This was posted this morning on the Updates page: Badger's sister spoke with the nurse at MGH. The nurse explained that when Alice broke her leg, it most likely released fat from the bone marrow into her bloodstream and caused her to go into lung failure. There is not much they can do except keep her body supported while her lungs repair themselves, a process that is likely to take weeks. She is in a medical coma now, and is on the maximum amount of machine-supported breathing assistance. She's also fighting infection and they're keeping an eye out for blood clots.

This is pretty serious stuff and I'm sure her partner Jeremy would appreciate the support of friends now. Her sister is keeping in touch with the medical folk at the hospital, but I know Badger needs as much positive energy and prayers as we can all spare. This is going to be a long haul.

On other fronts, I have two contractors coming in to look and give estimates, and the insurance adjuster comes in tomorrow at 8 am. I am slowly getting a handle on cleaning up and out.

Someone at HarperCollins sent me a copy of Gregory MaGuire's Out of Oz. Thank you, annonymous gift giver!

It was great to see my step-mother while in SF visiting Mum and my sister. What a nice bonus. Talis loved seeing her too.

On Saturday, while waiting around for Spencer at Home Despot, I found out that Marty Gear had surgery on Friday, to replace his defibrillator (aka hockey puck). Having spoken to him yesterday, he sounds great and seems to be doing better than ever.

And this morning, I got a call and two e-mails about my next NORC project. I should be hearing more later today; training starts next week, the project begins in January.

So, this month has certainly had its ups and downs. December has got to be better.

This is actually a placeholder for somethings I want to note down, and hopefully be able to expand upon at some date hopefully sooner than later.

Have started planning for NEFFA, April 20-22, 2012 dance performances. If any one has an international dance group they think should be seen as part of the Dance Performances, please let me know, or send them to the NEFFA web site, where the application link will be up until 23:59 on November 1.

End of farm last week was bittersweet, as I have really enjoyed being the pick up coordinator on Thursdays. It gave me another angle of the CSA world, and I loved seeing the Thursday share holders every week for 4.5 months, seeing the kids grow, sharing recipes and what to do with the items in each weeks share, and discovering new friends. The farm assistants, Lauren and Bea; wonderful strong women I hope to keep in my life. Other workshares also.

Talis finally home from her summer jaunts around the US and the French West Indies. She's almost 16, and itching to drive. Drivers Ed now required in MA to even take a driving test... and expensive! Note: call the local high school to see if they get any price breaks.

Listing of patterns, books, etc from Russell's Mom's belongings.

Gifts from RJ: 1933 edition of Fannie Farmer (aka The Boston Cooking School Cookbook, by FM Farmer); 100th Anniversary publication by H.P.Hood & Sons in 1946 Foods That Made New England Famous, 100 Favorite Recipes from the Kitchens of Old New England; The Galloping Gourmet Television Cookbook, Vol. 1 and 2. by Graham Kerr; Hidden gardens of Beacon Hill published by the Beacon Hill Garden Club in 1972; and The Boston See Party; A Walking or Riding Tour of Boston, Freedom Trail, , MIT-Harvard, Concord, Lexington, Plymouth, I think by Allan Dow, CPCU, Vice President , Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, no year.

Westat project: Long Term Trends. Ongoing from Oct-May... very few hours overall for AA position. I am low person on the totem pole for the cushy positions with Westat. :-(

NORC project: National Survey of Early Care and Education, training early December, study starts Jan 9.

Arisia... SPeaker to hotel about food, Tech Mom, Voyagers Grand Sleepover

Boskone: Mentor Talis in DragonsLair programming

OVFF: Not going this year... :-(

Wegman's: got a thanks but no thanks letter for both customer service and kitchen work. Still no word from TJ's.

Lists of things to give away. Two glitter lamps, same idea as lava lamps. Is anyone having a clothing swap anytime soon?

And, the wife of a dear friend passed on last Saturday evening. Service and burial on Sunday. The benefit of not going to Ohio.

well, this got to be long...

Come for fish (it's Friday, no, I'm not Catholic) and the bounty from my CSA. I am thinking of fish tacos... but am open to suggestions. If you want to contribute, appetizers, beverages, or dessert would be appropriate. (Although, my double chocolate zucchini bread and cinnamon zucchini cake have been going over quite well, so maybe a dessert to go along...) Please RSVP so I know how many leaves to put into the table. :-) 508-282-0089 or persis at thorndike dot name
